23-year-old midfielder Ratobe Poireng, a native of Poilwa village and from Zeilang community under Peren district in Nagaland, has been signed for Swedish sixth-division club Lilla Torg FF.
He underwent a one-month tryout after which Lila Torg FF offered him a contract. Poireng also trained at the Bundesliga side Hannover 96’s facility in March to improve his fitness levels and conditioning.
Speaking to the daily Nagaland Post after signing the deal in Sweden’s Malmo city, Poireng expressed his eagerness to try his luck in the lower divisions of Europe. “I’m so happy that I am the first Naga to join an European football club and I thank God for hearing my prayer. I can’t really wait to play with my new team,” he said.
He had previously played for local clubs in Northeastern states of India like Barak FC Peren, Nagaland Police team and Guwahati Town club.
