Assam Arm-Wrestler to Represent India at World Championships

Arm-wrestler Monoj Debnath is going to represent India in the 38th World Arm-Wrestling Championship 2016 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria to be staged from October 1-10.

In 2015, the Assamese athlete won a silver medal at the 2nd Indo-Pak Arm Wrestling Championship in Pakistan and also secured 10th position in overall ranking at the 37th World Arm-Wrestling Champions held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.  He also won a gold medal in the National Arm-Wrestling Championship 2016 organised in Maharashtra on May 24.

He started his arm-wrestling career in 2013 after grabbing a winning title at a college level Arm-wrestling in his hometown Dibrugarh. Meeting Arup Rajkonwar from Dibrugarh, an international Arm-wrestling player, completely motivated his love towards the sport and got trained under him at Power Factory Gym.

His dad Babul Debnath is an Auto driver by profession so coming up with such huge travel expense to Bulgaria was a bit difficult. Luckily for him, two of his hometown folks – Businessman Subir Kejriwal and Dibru College Professor Dr. Mahesh Jain stepped in and they are currently busy raising fund for him to participate in the World Championship event.
