Manipuri girl wins silver at Asian Junior Championships

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, an 18-year-old Manipuri Weightlifter has bagged a silver medal in 48 kg category at Asian Junior Championships in Bishkek, Krygyzstan.

In 2012, she was the only Weightlifter from India to clinched three bronze medals for Team India at the 19th Junior Women Asian Weightlifting Championships in Yangon in Mynamar.

Again, a month ago, this young Mirabai won three bronze medals in women’s 48 kg category at the Junior Weightlifting World Championship in Lima, peru. She had earlier won gold medal during the seventh National Youth (Girls) Weightlifting Championships 2011 held at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.

According to a report by Hueiyen News Service;

[blockquote]She was born in 1994, as the sixth and the youngest child of Saikhom Kriti and Saikhom ongbi Tombi Leima of Nongpok Kakching in Manipur. Mirabai began her weightlifting career in 2007, traveling 50 km daily (to/return) on public buses to attend her weightlifting classes at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.[/blockquote]

She made her debut tournament appearance in a state level championship in 2008. In September 2009, Mirabai participated in the 5th National Youth Junior Girls Weightlifting Championships and won her first national bronze medal.

Her first international appearance was in the Asian Junior Weightlifting Championships held in Pattaya, Thailand in 2011.
