FIFA confirmed Guwahati as fifth venue for 2017 World Cup (U-17)

Guwahati on Monday joined Goa, New Delhi, Kochi and Navi Mumbai as one of the venues to host next year’s Fifa U-17 World Cup after it received the green signal from a 13-member FIFA delegation of football’s world body.

Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium Guwahati, the home ground for Northeast United FC became the fifth venue to get go ahead light. The opening ceremony of 2016 Indian Super League (ISL) was staged here too. The venue has a capacity of 35,000 seats.

“This world sporting event could be critical in the Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal vision of making Assam the sports hub of India,” said Javier Ceppi who is the Tournament Director of Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the upcoming international tournament.

FIFA Event Manager Marion Mayer-Vorfelder hailed the training facilities of the stadium, “It’s a win for not just the state of Assam but for the entire Northeast region.”

FIFA U-17 World Cup India 2017 will be held in six venues across the country during October 2017.
