Syeda Anwara Taimur (born November 24, 1936) was the first female Chief Minister of Assam. She completed her graduation from Aligarh University. Anwara was lecturer in Economics in Debicharan Barua Girls College, Jorhat for some years. In 1972, she was elected as a member of state legislature Assembly and appointed as Education Minister during the reign of Sarat Chandra Singha and she was re-elected again in 1978.
Taimur served as chief minister of the state from December 6, 1980, to June 30, 1981.
Her term ended when President’s rule was imposed on the state for six months. She was also a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1988 to 1990.
